David S. Whitfield

David was raised in Sarnia, Ontario. He received his undergraduate and his law degrees from McMaster University and the University of Windsor, respectively and was called to the Bar in 1974. David is a past member of the Ontario Bar Association, the Waterloo Law Association, a member of the Waterloo-Wellington Estate Planning Council, a member of the international organization of Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, a member of the Gyro Club, and the Stewardship Committee of St. John's Anglican Church.


Over the years, David has been a Trustee and editor of the local law association newsletter, a legal advisor to and board member of Castle Kilbride, president of the Gyro Club, the Social Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo, and Waterloo Wellington Estate Planning Council, a trustee and warden of his church, fund raiser for many charitable events and founding member of the Waterloo Community Legal Services office. He enjoys giving speeches on legal topics to various interest groups.


David's areas of practice included corporate & commercial, shareholders and partnership agreements, business transactions, banking and financing (for both lenders and borrowers), real estate, commercial leases, mortgage enforcement, wills, powers of attorney, trusts, succession planning, and estate administration. David provided legal counsel to several significant companies over the years and has enjoyed being part of their dynamic growth.


When not practicing law, David has been the organizer and a left winger for two hockey teams of friends and acquaintances for over the last three decades. He is a member of Westmount Golf Club, where he enjoys golf and tennis. David is married to Linda and they are the proud parents of a daughter, Lindsay, and a son, Andrew.


David retired from the practice of law in 2016, after practicing law in the community for 43 years. Giffen LLP is grateful to David for his contribution to the firm, and continues to look after David's former corporate, commercial, and estates clients.
