Phil was a partner of Giffen Lawyers LLP from 1991 to 2022. He enjoyed a lengthy career as a trial lawyer and remains Counsel to the firm.

 

Phil attended the University of Toronto, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours) in 1982 and the University of Windsor receiving his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1985. He completed formal training as a mediator at the Centre for Dispute Resolution in Boulder, Colorado. He is an accredited arbitrator with the ADR Institute of Ontario.

 

He obtained his CRM (Risk Management) designation from the Global Risk Management Institute after completion of studies at the University of Toronto.

 

He is a member of the Advocates Society, the Canadian Bar Association, the Waterloo Law Association, the ADR Institute of Ontario, the Global Risk Management Institute, and the American Association for Justice.
 

Phil’s practice as a trial lawyer focused on personal injury, construction, disability, product and occupiers liability, professional negligence, EPL, municipal and government liability claims as well as other employment and estate litigation matters. 

 

He regularly acts as a mediator and arbitrator and also provides neutral evaluations and advice in dispute resolution systems design in the areas of insurance claims, construction, employment, and commercial disputes. Phil's mediation and arbitration services are offered through Peaceworks ADR.*


Phil lives in Waterloo with his wife and two children.  He has received numerous volunteer service awards for his many years of community service with minor sports, arts and charitable organizations.  When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, golfing, skiing and coaching basketball.
